It’s been 11 years since we first got Gale Lag Ja. Damn, how quickly time passes by!
There was a brief period during the late 2000s where it felt that Katrina Kaif was mutually paired with Akshay Kumar in every other movie. Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi, the 4th instalment in his cop-universe, would’ve seen the couple on the silver screen together after 10 years.
2009’s multi-starrer De Dana Dan saw Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar share screen with notable actors like Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Vikram Gokhale and many more. Although, a forgettable outing for our pair, we got a great Bollywood sex song in Gale Lag Ja. So, no one’s complaining.
Bollywood’s very own “superchor,” Pritam
The music for De Dana Dan was provided by the notorious genius, Pritam. I still haven’t forgiven him for using Usher’s Yeah! in the abhorrent song, Paisa Paisa. Such disrespect.
However, Pritam made up for the travesty by giving us Gale Lag Ja. I still remember I went from cursing Pritam to praising him immediately. Two conflicting emotions in the same album! Safe to say, I have a love-hate relationship with Pritam.
A brilliant assembly of artists to create Gale Lag Ja
Darta Hai Dil, Khata Yeh Kar Baithe Naa
Mohabbat Ke Josh Mein
Practically unknown, Ashok Pandit was the brains behind these words. I looked up Pandit to see what else he’s written. I was surprised to find out that he doesn’t have a lot of songs credited to his name. Come on Bollywood, hire this guy more often. Maybe you won’t have to resort to remaking and remixing older songs.
My personal favourite, Javed Ali and Banjyotsna brought these words to life by giving an outstanding vocal performance. Known for subtle, romantic songs like Jashn-E-Bahaara and Guzarish, Ali entered into the world of Bollywood sex songs, a relatively unknown terrain for him. Suffice to say, Javed Ali can do no wrong.
Oh In Labon Se Kahon, Jo Armaan Hai
Barso Yeh Honth Chup Rahe
Priyadarshan went all guns blazing in directing the music video for Gale Lag Ja. Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif were drenched in water almost throughout the video. Yet, it was not enough to put out the fire set ablaze by the two.
De Dana Dan was released with Priyadarshan’s usual suspects like Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi and Sunil Shetty. Yet, it disappointed at the box office. I’m certain the audiences must’ve erased it from their memories. However, the creative collaboration that went to produce a sensual song like Gale Lag Ja will forever be etched in our memories.
