The History of International Masturbation Month

International Masturbation Month | Unmysh 2020

If God had intended us not to masturbate, he would have made our arms shorter.

As we are in the latter stage of the International Masturbation Month, I remember these wise words from the great, George Carlin.

There’s always some philosophy layered in Carlin’s comedy. And you know what, I agree with him.

Masturbation is an act of self-love, self-pleasure.

If Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle from Parks and Recreation were asked to describe masturbation, they would’ve said, “Treat. Yo’. Self.”

Unfortunately, there’s a majority that does not share our worldview on this.

That’s why it is important to know the history of International Masturbation Month as we reach the 25th year from its inception.

What if I tell you that the story of International Masturbation Month involves a US President, a surgeon general and a sex shop?

Sounds weird, but it’s 100% true.

Joycelyn Elders – the hero we deserve and need

In 1993, Joycelyn Elders was nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve as the 15th Surgeon General of the United States.

As an endocrinologist, Elders understood the importance of sexual health. She worked with young diabetic women and educated them on the complications of pregnancy.

Elders also worked hard to spread sexual and reproductive awareness, especially in the African-American community.

However, some of Elders’ sex education reforms proved too progressive for the Clinton presidency.

Her suggestion to add masturbation as part of the sex education curriculum for the young adults was met with dissent.

Succumbing to public pressure, President Clinton forced resignation from Joycelyn Elders in 1994.

 Sex shop creates history

The resignation of Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders sparked a conversation about masturbation the following year.

A San Francisco based sex-positive corporation named Good Vibrations (great name) decided to declare May as International Masturbation Month in support of Elders.

Needless to say, the President’s move to get rid of Elders backfired miserably.

Some people consider 7th May to be International Masturbation Day while some argue it’s 28th May.

However, Good Vibrations’ intention was to celebrate the act of masturbation throughout the month of May.

So, every day is self-loving, isn’t it?

There’s no denying that President Bill Clinton’s presidency was mired with controversy.

What started as a reactionary movement, regarding the firing of Elders, turned about the conversation about the importance of self-love.

A woman getting fired for talking about masturbation in one part of the world has led to billions all around the globe celebrating the same for an entire month!

Heartwarming, right?
